SOMETIMES WHEN WE MEET

This novel spans two countries that could not be more different from each other — Sweden and India. The two protagonists (the Swede, Carl, and the Indian, Jose) come in contact with each other through the medium of amateur radio (popularly known as ham radio). (By the way, the novel is set in the decade before the arrival of the Internet.) They meet each other when Jose travels to Stockholm to participate in a radio conference. The story is a celebration of their friendship that bridges the vast gulf between the liberal Scandinavian and the conservative Indian cultures.

Beautiful Story of Love and Friendship [2009/12/27]  www.buybooksontheweb.com

Heather

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were completely believable and after the first few chapters, I was totally drawn into the story and couldn’t put it down. Jose’s naive ways and pure heart, together with his love for life makes you want to have him as your very own friend. A lovely book. Highly recommend purchasing.

The back-cover blurb

In this story spanning Sweden and India, Jose, an impressionable young Indian, travels to Sweden in the year 1984 to meet Carl, an amateur radio friend he has never met. Jose does not know till he meets his Indophile friend, that Carl is gay. Jose’s experiences on his first travel overseas culminate in his falling in love with Inga.

Their friendship is climactically resolved when Carl visits Jose and his wife Leena in the winter of 1993 against the backdrop of political upheavals in Europe and India and militant trade-unionism at the tea-estate where Jose is employed.
