Looking for an opportunity to combine a vacation with some good deeds?

Here’s a project that combines altruism and adventure – and, as an added bonus, there’s a tax discount in it as well!

I am looking for volunteers to join a team of approximately 10 members for a two-week trip to Armenia in September-October this year. (The exact dates will be decided later based on the convenience of the participants.) The project is to assist in the construction or renovation of affordable housing in Armenia, especially for families still living in shipping containers 29 years after the earthquake of 1988.

This is a project of the Fuller Center for Housing, Americus, Georgia, in partnership with their local office, the Fuller Center for Housing Armenia.

Why the Fuller Center? It is a relatively small nonprofit that stays close to the grassroots level and has the highest platinum rating by GuideStar that evaluates nonprofits. In simple terms, the Fuller Center’s stewardship standards are high and their overhead is low, making it cost-effective.

The advantages of the project? Participants will have the benefit of working shoulder to shoulder with local people and the families who will benefit from the project. There will be many opportunities to explore the neighborhood, immerse yourself in the Armenian culture, and enjoy the famed Armenian cuisine.  In addition, sightseeing to nearby tourist spots is included on weekends.

The tax benefits? Ordinarily, if you take part in all the scheduled volunteer work, you can claim a tax deduction on the entire cost of the trip, including the airfare. Needless to add, the deduction is governed by IRS regulations and will depend on the specific financial situation of a participant.

How much physical labor is involved? You can choose tasks that match your physical ability. Participants of all ages join hands in the project. In previous trips, there have been team members in their 80’s.

If, for any reason, you cannot make the trip yourself to Armenia, but would like to vicariously participate in the project from the comfort of your home, please consider sponsoring a participant on your behalf or support the group in general with a tax-deductible donation.

The trip may be particularly attractive to members of the Armenian diaspora as an opportunity to actively contribute to the homeland. They would have the option of spending evenings and non-work hours with their family or friends. A mixed group would be wonderful!

More information on the project, including approximate costs, can be had on request. Please message me privately using Messenger. Subsequent exchanges can be via direct email.

I look forward to hearing from you!
